| In superb condition, printed on a sheet with uncommonly wide margins.
On the feast of Epiphany (known in Dutch as the feast of the three kings), the children would parade through the streets with a paper lantern in the shape of a star - the king's star - and sing old carols. In Rembrandt's etching the figures loom ghostlike in the dim light of the star and the windows in the background.
The same theme is the subject of an earlier drawing by Rembrandt himself.
Original etching with touches of drypoint printed in black ink on laid paper.
A strong, dark 17th century / lifetime impression of Bartsch's only state, Usticke's first state of seven, printed prior to the additional diagonal lines of shading being added to the face of the woman at the center.
Bartsch 113; Hind 254; Biorklund-Barnard 55-I; Usticke 113 i/vii
